Happy Birthday to Steel Arm Tyler – Evansville’s Major League record holder

His nine victories with the Memphis Red Sox in 1925 are the most by a 17 year-old pitcher in Major League baseball history.

Born in Evansville in 1907, he began his professional pitching career at the young age of 15. William “Steel Arm” Tyler was considered the greatest black pitcher in baseball during his early years in the Negro Leagues, while still in his teens. His remarkable story can be found in my newest book.

He resided in Evansville during his professional baseball career and settled in Elkton, Kentucky after his playing days were over. He was (and still is) a beloved figure in that town.

As with most Negro League stars, Steel Arm’s “official” Major League stats do not fully reflect his greatness. See the “books” page for the whole story.

Happy Birthday!
