One of the true joys of writing things that were never written before is receiving surprises from friends and family members of long forgotten heroes. I’m thrilled to post a wonderful photo of Evansville pitching sensation William “Steelarm” Tyler. I received this from Charles A. Haddix Jr., the grandson of Steelarm.

Steelarm Tyler as an All Star
Mr. Haddix noted that the photo was from his mother, Stella Tyler Haddix, who was Steelarm’s daughter. He also made me aware that Steelarm also had a son, Wilbur Tyler, who was also from Evansville. Wilbur was a member of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department before retiring.
The pitching great pictured here was devoted eight pages in my recent book, Black Ball in Evansville: Diamonds in the Shadows.
